President Chris Nwasike honored Duval County Republican Party Chairman Lenny Curry, Florida Assembly of Black Republicans Chair and Duval County Republican Party 2nd Vice Chairman Sam Newby, Duval County State Commiteewoman and President of the Florida Federation of Republican Women Cindy Graves, as well as Stephen and Tena Heckel for their counsel and support. Other Young Republicans recognized were Melinda Fischer, Quintin Kerby and Grier Lyall. Mayor Peyton joined the ceremony and sparked a discussion amongst the audience of young leaders that included reviving the downtown area, keeping the Jaguars in town, and the value of youth outreach programs such as Jacksonville Journey. Downtown revival, according to Mayor Peyton, is critical to Jacksonville’s growth and progress. For him improving the health of the downtown will attract residents and business as well as make Jacksonville a competitive force among other Southeastern cities. Keeping the Jaguars in Jacksonville is another issue that Mayor’s office considers to be vital. He noted that retaining the NFL franchise should be a concern for all Jacksonville residents. The Mayor also highlighted the high return over investment of time and money spent on such programs as Jacksonville Journey as they nurture youth to mature into responsible citizens who give back to their own communities. Another hot topic during the meeting was that of education. The mayor reflected on the involvement of Duval County School System with the Teach for America initiative and Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP), citing that programs such as these are a step in the right direction towards improving education in our region. The Duval County Young Republicans thank Mayor Peyton for his time and candid discussion. The Duval County Young Republicans are committed to being active in the incredible grass roots network of Northeast Florida as well as helping members learn about all facets of the political world, such as fundraising, communication, leadership, as well as to prepare the next generation of Republican candidates.
